I want to start a short story anthology project with other writers. I'm just going to throw my idea out there and see what happens.

Anthology #1: First contact

:bulletblue: A collection of stories about first meetings. Boy meets Girl. Girl meets Girl. Boy meets Boy. Girl meets alien species. Boy meets AI. It can be a romantic, platonic, antagonistic, etc. meeting. Any genre is accepted. I intended it to be about two characters meeting for the first time, but take the prompt however you see it. The story cannot be fan-fiction. It can be about fan characters, but the setting cannot obviously be fandom. Ex. Your Harry Potter FC's can attend a generic magic school, but it can't be called Hogwarts and they can't meet on Platform 9 3/4.
Aside from that, there are generally no restrictions on content as long it follows the prompt.

:bulletgreen: Word Count: 1000-7,500 words. No rounding. 999 and 7,501 are both inadmissible.
:bulletgreen: Deadline: February 22, 2014 11:59:59 EST
:bulletgreen: The story can be old or new, but it cannot be available anywhere else.

F.A.Q

:new: What is an anthology? How does this work?
-An anthology is basically "a book or other collection of selected writings by various authors, usually in the same literary form, of the same period, or on the same subject." So, for this it would be a collection of themed short stories written by various deviantart writers.

-In a nutshell, I'll select some of the stories submitted to put into a downloadable pdf aka the anthology, Speaking in Scribbles. Then I would compile a summary of all the works in the anthology and upload that as a lit deviation. People can then pay a small amount of points to receive the download link to the anthology. That small amount would be divided among all the writers who contributed a story. The writers would retain all rights to their story; it would just be a part of the collection.

Can I submit more than one story?
-You can submit up to two stories. That's it.

Can I write an AU of my own characters?
-Absolutely. Have a what-if scenario? Feel free to submit it.

Can I write poetry? Can I write a script/play?
-No. Prose only. It's a collection of short stories.

Can I submit a picture?
-You can upload a picture to your deviantart gallery and use it to advertise the story you've submitted to the anthology. But as of right now, we will not be including any visual art in the anthology.

Could I submit the first chapter of a longer story?
-Your submission should read as a standalone short story. And once it's in the anthology, you won't be able to upload it as part of your longer story.

If I have a story that follows all of the above guidelines, but I've already posted it. Can I take it down and then submit to the anthology?
-Yes, you could if you really wanted to. If you think your readers will buy something that had previously been free, then I certainly don't mind. Make sure it's formatted correctly before submitting.

Why no fan-fiction?
-Because I don't think it's right or legal to make a profit off of someone else's intellectual property.

What's this about a profit?
-The anthology will be available to readers for a small amount of points. Not a lot, so make sure you want to write your story because you want to write it. There's no guarantee anyone will actually buy it. But anyone and everyone who contributes a story will get a share of the points. For now, it's going to be 50 :points: for every 10,000 words in the total anthology. Every contributor gets an equal share per story

-Ex. We get 10 stories and the anthology totals 20,000 words. It'll be 100 :points:. When someone buys it, a writer who contributed one story will get 10 :points:. A writer who contributed two will get 20 :points:.

That doesn't sound fair.
-Well, that's what I got for now. If you've got a fairer option for dividing the profits let me know.

What if the profits don't divide equally?
-Every contributor will get an equal share. I'll take whatever's left over. I'll call it a hosting fee for putting this all together, but it's really an 'I don't want to hear anyone whining that so-and-so got more points than they did' fee.

-Ex. We get 12 stories and the anthology totals 20,000 words. It'll be 100 :points:. When someone buys it, a writer who contributed one story will get 8 :points:. A writer who contributed two will get 16 :points:. I'll get those remaining 4 :points:.

Now that really doesn't sound fair!
-Tough. It's as fair as I can make it. If you've got something better, then please let me know. If you just want to complain, then don't. No one's forcing you to participate.

How will I receive the points? Can I get my share in a manner that can be converted to cash?
-Because there's going to be many writers, asking the reader to divvy up the points is a lot of work. So, they'll send all of the points to me and I'll divide the points amongst the writers. If you'd like I can give the points in a manner that can be converted to cash if you really want it that way. But remember point conversion has to be in multiples of 10, so if you only earn 5 :points: the first go round you'll have to wait for someone else to buy. So, if you're okay with that, I'm okay with that.

How will the anthology look?

Is there a selection process?
-Anyone can submit, but I'll be choosing between 5 and 20 stories to put into the anthology. If you bitch at me about rejecting your story, I'll block you. I don't tolerate whiners. All I'm looking for are decent, interesting stories that fit into the current prompt.

All right. I'm interested, but I'm not a very good writer. Should I even bother submitting?
-Ultimately, you're the one who has to decide if you want to submit a story to the anthology, but here's a few tips I've compiled about writing in general that you should keep in mind.

All right. I'm interested, but I don't want my story associated with my deviantart account. Do you need to know my username?
-:o Okay, sure. I'm going to need know your deviantart account, but it doesn't have to go in the anthology. You can have a pseudonym.

All right. I'm interested, but not in this anthology. Can I start my own based off of this?
-Yes. Please don't take any themes this anthology is currently working on. Please don't take the answers from this F.A.Q word for word. I've answered them in my own words and it makes me uncomfortable to see my exact words being used by other people. And please make the anthology different in some way. Make it genre-specific, character-specific, language-specific fandom-specific, etc. I don't care, but starting an anthology based off of another anthology that does the exact same thing as the original is...weird and a little disrespectful.

All right. I'm interested. How do I enter?

-Advertise the anthology! You can do any of the following:
:bulletpurple: Make a new journal/poll about the anthology now.
:bulletpurple: Tell 10 deviants about the anthology now.
:bulletpurple: Wait and make a new journal/poll about the anthology when it's ready for the public.
:bulletpurple: Wait and submit the anthology deviation to a group that has at least 250 watchers.
:bulletpurple: Wait and tell 10 deviants about the anthology when it's ready for the public.

Send me a link with proof of whatever you did. If you decide to wait, I'll remind you when the anthology is ready for readers. If, by the time we make our first sale, you still have not advertised, your share will be withheld and you will receive another reminder. If you still haven't advertised after a month, then you won't receive your share at all.

I have a question, comment, or concern that you didn't address.
-Lay it on me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. But if your question was already answered, I'm not going to be happy. :stare:
