Welcome!

So for the summer, I decided to do a Draw My OC Contest. I'm slowly, oh so slowly, turning this account into my personal account so I want to bring attention to my main OC, Rhys. He's from a 4 book series, I've been writing for years now. I'm currently writing Book 2 and I have Book 3 planned out. If you want to enter this contest, I hope you have some spare time because you'll be required to read both---just joking!  :iconhurrhurrplz:

All you have to read is this journal and, of course, the info about the character you're drawing. You can read it if you want (just send me a note), but... combined wordcount of Books 1&2 is 270,000 words. Right now, I don't even want to read it! Anyway, I feel pretentious warning for spoilers from a series that may or may not see the public, but here's one anyway. This entire thing is one gigantic spoiler for the Blood Brothers Series. :iconwoooplz:

Quick Summary

After centuries at conflict, the war between the dark elves (the Avilans) and the wild elves (the Cathal) has come to a tenuous end. The wild elves are anti-magic warriors feared by all. Rhys is a dark elf-wild elf hybrid (an aval) raised by his wild elf father in the capital. All he wants to be is the best wild elf he can be and serve his country. Things get a little tougher when three men show up claiming to be his brothers on his mother's side and telling him he has magic: the ability to shapeshift into an animal.

Prizes

There are three categories. The following prize can be won:

Category 1 and 3
$10 through paypal, a $10 Amazon Gift Card or 800:points:
1 Simple Ref (base full-body + 3 freehand headshots + accessories, if any)
2 Base Chibis

For Category 2
$15 through paypal, a $15 Amazon Gift Card or 1200:points:
1 Simple Ref (base full-body + 3 freehand headshots + accessories, if any)
2 Base Chibis

If there are less than 10 entries in a category each participant will receive $1 or 80:points:. If there are more than 30 entries in a category, I'll increase the first place prize and add a second.

Rules

  1. Most media is allowed (digital, pixel, traditional, literature, 3d art creation, etc.), but see below for any stipulations on your chosen medium. If your chosen medium is not listed, ask me first so you don't end up wasting your time.
  2. Harassing other participants or the winners is strictly prohibited. Anyone accused of this (with proof) will be disqualified and/or reported.
  3. I don't care about the rating, but keep in mind that the series focuses on non-romantic pairings (though there are some romantic ones) and a higher rating for sexual themes are likely to be out of character. But if you think you can make it work...run it by me first.
  4. Link back to this journal and credit the character(s) to me in your entry.
  5. You may enter as often as you like.
  6. You don't have to watch or advertise. If you fave this journal, you'll receive a reminder note closer to the due date if you haven't submitted an entry.
  7. Keep reading to see the raffle opportunity. ;p

Media Stipulations

  • Digital - Color palette must be accurate. You can color pick directly so there's no excuse.
  • Pixel - No icons by themselves. Animation, even just blinking, would be nice.
  • Traditional - Do your best with color schemes, I understand, but scan and/or clean up the image thoroughly. Bad image quality will bring down your chances of winning for the simple fact that I can't see it. I'd also love love if we could discuss having the original to me after the contest is over, but it's obviously not required. I'd pay for shipping (within reason - I live in America) + some sort of art exchange if you'd like. Also, please sign it if you send it.
  • Literature - Prose only. Not poetry and not scripts.
  • 3d Art Creation - Things like Daz Studios, 3ds Max, Maya, etc. Just remember the four things I'll be judging on!

To Enter

  • Respond to the appropriate 'ENTER HERE' comment with a link to your entry. That's it!
  • Deadline: July 31st 11:59PM, EST

Judging

  • Design Accuracy - color scheme, character design, etc (30%)
  • Character Accuracy - character personality, character interaction, etc. (30%)
  • Style - be unique! I love seeing all the different styles of dA. (30%)
  • Effort - this is almost impossible to judge, but if you throw up a sketch ten minutes after I upload this contest journal, I'm not going to think you did your best (10%)

Category 1: Rhys

Objective: Draw Rhys. Solo.

  • Must have male humanoid Rhys in it.
  • May include other versions of Rhys.

Category 2: Rhys and Others

Objective: Draw Rhys with at least one other character from the series.

  • Twenty-two character choices
  • Click headshots (below) for a brief character summary and personality

ENTER HERE

Category 3: Rhys - Written

Objective: Write Rhys with at least one other character from the series.

  • Minimum Word Count - 1,000 words; no maximum, I love long stories
  • May be AU, since you're not required to read the source material, but I'd prefer if it were still a fantasy setting.
  • Judging is a little different: Character Accuracy (character personality, character interaction, etc.) 45%, Storyline (engaging and interesting or dry and bland) 45%, Grammar and Spelling (self-explanatory) 10%

Questions?

See if I answered it here before asking.

Question: Can I enter?
Answer:  Yes, of course. There's no need to ask. Anybody and everybody is welcome.

Question: When does this end?
Answer: July 31st, which was already stated in the journal so maybe you should reread it.

Question: What kind of art could win this contest?
Answer: Anything from sketchy headshots to a fully colored illustration. I watch a variety of people who do anything from detailed, uncolored head/bustshots sketches to traditional chibis to cartoony full-bodes to digital semi-realistic comics. I really do love it all. As long as it's your style and it hits on the three other things I'm judging on, it could win.

Question: A sketch headshot? I know what I'm doing for the contest.
Answer: Hehe, no. :stare: First off a sketchy headshot as in your style is sketchy not a sketch as in you didn't finish. Second, if your gallery is filled with colored illustration I'm going to know you didn't put your full effort in. And third, if sketchy isn't your style, it's going to show in your finished product and I can guarantee someone else will win.

Question
: Besides Rhys, who do you want me to draw/write? Who should I draw/write to win? What character do you most want to see with Rhys?
Answer: Please don't ask me this. It's your choice. I want to see which character most people choose. And going with my favorite character with Rhys is not an automatic win. It doesn't even give you a better chance of winning. There isn't going to be a section of this journal where I give "hints" on what I want to see. I want to see who you want to work with.

Question: I can't draw humans, but you mentioned shapeshifters. Can I draw the shapeshifting characters as animals?
Answer: Short answer, no. If you can't draw humanoids at all, this isn't the contest for you. I want Rhys's two-legged form in every picture. However, in the first category, you can include Rhys's dragon form, but you'll have to design it yourself. As for category 2 and the other shapeshifting characters, you may only draw Torben in his wolf form since I had it designed for me; it's included with his reference.

Question: Can I draw the characters in different clothes?
Answer:  Eh, depends. Some characters can be altered, but it's listed alongside their references. But if you just want to make them more detailed I'm a-okay with that, but completely changing them is on a case by case basis.

Question: Can I genderbend?
Answer:  Yes, but... In category 1, if you draw Rhys as a female, you must also draw him as a male. In category 2, you may draw Rhys as a female only if you draw Sorcha as a male in the same image. That's the only occasion where I'll accept it.

Question: Can I use a base?
Answer: Yes, but... it must be your own base, drawn by you and not traced from anything. And remember that character accuracy counts. Does your base accurately represent the character?

Question: I have a question about Rhys's personality. Can you answer?
Answer:  I'd rather not give anyone an unfair advantage/anymore information than anyone else about him. But I suppose if you have a specific question about a specific scenario and how he or any other character would react you can ask in the comments section so other people can read it. But I'd also rather you asked than take a shot in the dark if I was unclear about something. It's a monster of a series and I'm struggling between giving so much information that it puts participants off and so little that it becomes confusing.

Question
: Not a question, but judging by effort is so unfair. Maybe full-bodies are hard for me, but because someone slapped a half-assed background on their pic, you think they put more effort into it. :saddummy:
Answer: Yeah, you're right. From this side of the computer screen I can't tell how much effort you put into it. But that's why 1) effort is a small percentage of criteria, 2) everyone starts off with full credit for effort and you can only lose points on it and 3)I don't mistake effort for skill.

Question: Not a question but... I want to enter, but I scoped out the competition and there's no way I can win! :noes: / I'll enter, but I never win these. *sigh* / If I enter, there's no way I'll win... / I want to enter, but I don't have my own style!
Answer: I never know how to respond to this. Do you want sympathy? Are you fishing for compliments? Are you looking for pity during the judging process. Or are you just letting me know you don't believe in yourself. Obviously, I'd love it if you entered, but if you think it's a massive waste of your time and you can't see this as an opportunity for improvement or to develop your style and to maybe win a prize, then don't enter. Simple as that. ;p

Question: Am I expected to read all the information about every character?
Answer: No, you don't have to read all the information if you don't want to. At the very least, you should read about the personalities of the characters you're drawing/writing. The bio is useful if you want to know how the characters know each other.

Question: Some of the information doesn't make sense! Can you fix it?
Answer: Um, no... Sorry? ^^; It's hard to boil down 200k to just the important parts. If you need something clarified, let me know and I'll do my best! You can also watch me because as I upload more personal art, I think a clearer picture of the series will be revealed. :XD:

Question: Are extensions available on the deadline?
Answer: Unless I move, go on vacation, lose Internet or laptop access, get sick or have some other unforeseen circumstance, there won't be any significant deadline extensions. However, if you ask for an extension before the deadline is up, I'll allow a 24-48 hour reprieve. It won't be for everyone. Just the people who request it.
